Chapter 11

I headed out of the bar and into the cool, city night. When I looked up, a small swarm of bats fluttered around in front of me before diving into an alley. I wondered what kind of things they fed on when they weren’t pests in vampires’ houses, stealing their blood bags. Maybe there were other types of animals in the city they could feed on, or maybe they flew into the woods.

I felt so comfortable being a vampire sire, but I realized there was still so much I didn’t know about Vampire Earth yet. Luckily, I had all the time in the world to learn from my experienced coven and wonderful women.

I turned around and looked back at the bar from the outside. I didn’t want it to be too conspicuous. It had to be classy, but if there was a big sign outside that read “freshest blood in town,” it wouldn’t exactly be a covert operation. I wondered what we’d be known as on the street when the word about our business got around.

I turned my eyes upward and looked at Crabapple’s apartment. I remembered that I still had to send Lenora over with the platinum I’d promised him. I doubted he’d remember due to the power of my charm, but I didn’t want to go back on my word, especially for such a meager sum of platinum compared to what we were going to make with this endeavor.

I couldn’t wait for it. The bar was going to be the most profitable venture I’d ever thought of. My first try at being a business owner, and I was already killing it.

I started walking east, back toward the mansion. I could’ve run, but it felt nice to be on my own again, and I scuffed my feet along the sidewalk and took a good look at my surroundings. I could never get to know Vampire New York if I was always running everywhere at the speed of light.

To my right I heard some scuffling in an alleyway, and I peered through.

It was nothing much to look at, just a bunch of waste bins with empty blood bags strewn all over the ground. That was one of the bad sides of living in a rougher neighborhood. The ones with the money didn’t see any point in making life better for the poor folk who lived here, so a lot of them scrambled around in the dark.

Suddenly a vampire appeared in the flickering streetlight. The tired streetlight made him seem all the more ominous, and he was lit the way a child looks when they hold a flashlight up to their face to tell a ghost story. He was all shadowy and yellow.

He had shoulder-length, dirty-blond, scraggly hair. It was oily and stringy, but I noticed it was similar in length to mine. He wore a leather shirt with the sleeves ripped off and leather trousers, with dress shoes to complete his outfit. He crouched low to the ground, and I could see him sniffing around for any drop he could find in the empty blood bags.
